Microsoft launches official version of Edge browser version 100

Microsoft today launched version 100 (100.0.1185.29) version of the Edge browser stable channel, bringing some updates. This is also a major milestone, but interestingly it caused some problems by mislabeling this version as Edge version 10.

In addition to the new features of the latest version of Chromium 100, the new version of Edge also includes the following features:

Improved cloud site list management experience in IE mode:

  • You can configure session cookie sharing between Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer for IE mode in the sites list in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Preview PDF files in Microsoft Outlook and File Manager:

  • Users can view PDF files in a simple but functional read-only (preview) mode, either as PDF attachments from Outlook (desktop) or as native PDF files using the file manager.

Sync installed web applications across all desktop devices:

  • Websites or Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that have been installed as apps in Edge will be synced across all logged-in desktop devices with sync enabled. They are listed as “Available Apps”. If you delete an app on one of your devices, Microsoft will automatically delete the app on all devices.

Microsoft has always adopted a gradual deployment scheme for the stable channel. Some users may not receive the update immediately, but they will definitely see the new version appear in a day or a few days.

Feature update

The three-digit version number in the user-agent string:

  • Microsoft Edge now sends a three-digit version number like Edge / 100 in the User-Agent header. This can confuse scripts or server-side analysis that use buggy parsers to determine the version number of the User-Agent string.
  • You can use the ForceMajorVersionToMinorPositionInUserAgent policy to control whether the major version of the User-Agent string should be frozen at 99. Additionally, there is the #force-major-version-to-minor flag in the edge:// tag to freeze the major version in the User-Agent string to 99.

Simplified Microsoft 365 Apps Agreement activation:

  • Microsoft 365 Apps Agreement activation of the trusted Microsoft cloud storage service will launch certain Microsoft 365 apps directly, including SharePoint subdomains and Microsoft OneDrive links.
  • If desired, you can use the policies AutoLaunchProtocolsComponentEnabled and AutoLaunchProtocolsFromOrigins to enable application protocol activation prompts and define other applications and services that enable or disable warnings.

Hardware-enforced stack protection:

  • Microsoft Edge will continue to support more fine-grained protections by combating memory corruption vulnerabilities and protecting indirect calls. Hardware-enforced stack protection is only supported on Windows 8 and above.

Open a digitally signed PDF file:

  • Digital signatures are widely used to verify the authenticity of documents and whether documents have been altered. You can use the PDFSecureMode policy to enable digital signature verification of PDF files directly from the browser without any plug-ins.

This update contains the following Microsoft Edge specific updates:

  • CVE-2022-24523
