Microsoft Edge is second most popular desktop browser: Statcounter

A few days ago, Adduplex released a report for March 2022, which has the latest information on the Windows market. The data shows that Windows 11 gained almost no new user growth in March 2022, and Windows 10 version 21H2 became the version with the largest share of users.

Now Statcounter’s March 2022 report shows that Microsoft’s Edge browser share is steadily climbing, gaining more consumers. According to Statcounter, Microsoft Edge is now the second most popular desktop browser.

In March 2022, Edge successfully surpassed Apple Safari and hit second place with a market share of 9.65% (+0.05). Safari ranks third with 9.56% (-0.21%), while Google Chrome still ranks first with a huge share of 67.29% (+2.4%).

  • Google Chrome: 67.29%

  • Microsoft Edge: 9.65%

  • Apple Safari: 9.56%

  • Mozilla Firefox: 7.57%

  • Opera: 2.81%

In a global market that combines mobile and desktop platforms, the situation is different. Google’s Chrome browser is still number one, with an overwhelming share, while the mobile market gives Safari a comfortable second position, still ahead of Microsoft Edge.

  • Google Chrome: 64.53% (+1.75)

  • Apple Safari: 18.84% (-0.46)

  • Microsoft Edge: 4.05% (-0.01)

  • Mozilla Firefox: 3.4% (-0.81)

  • Samsung Internet: 2.82% (+0.05)

Moreover, Microsoft is a relatively new player in the mobile browser market and is currently struggling to compete with Safari and Chrome. Microsoft doesn’t have the power to force users to switch to Edge on mobile, another reason Android and iOS combine to crush Microsoft’s browser market data.

Edge, however, is showing a healthy trend of progress on the desktop platform. Additionally, with Microsoft changing its approach to setting the default browser in Windows 11, users can expect Edge to continue to gain more traction in the eyes of consumers.
