Microsoft and Qualcomm have a close cooperative relationship, so far, Windows 10 ARM laptops have not had much impact.
As per the report, Windows 10 on ARM notebooks may soon get another impetus. Qualcomm’s rumored Snapdragon 7cx Gen2 chip can provide support for more affordable ‘always online and always connected’ laptops.
The cheapest Windows 10 on ARM devices start at US$599, and if you buy flagship products from companies like Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, their prices are even higher.
Currently, the choice of Windows 10 on ARM PC is very limited. Compared with Intel or AMD notebooks, users do not have economical or mid-range options.
In addition to Apple’s M1 competitors, Qualcomm is believed to be also developing the Snapdragon 7cx Gen 2, which is internally code-named ‘SC7295.’
In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 7cx Gen2 is similar to the Snapdragon 775, which is a processor that will be designed specifically for flagship Android phones.
The Snapdragon 7cx Gen2 processor of Windows 10 will provide the highest frequency of 2.7GHz. It will have three ‘large’ cores with a frequency of 2.4GHz and four ‘small’ cores with a frequency of up to 1.8GHz.
According to earlier reports, the processor is being tested on the 64-bit version of Windows 10 ARM. Unfortunately, little information about this processor has been leaked online. For example, it is not clear about the launch date, TDP value, and whether it will use improved thermal design power to reduce overheating.
In the evaluation of the first batch of notebook computers running Snapdragon 8xx, insufficient support for mid-range devices was the most common complaint. By adding more PC-optimized chips to the Snapdragon product line, Qualcomm can finally improve the performance of Windows ARM.
As mentioned above, Qualcomm is also developing a high-end processor code-named ‘SC8280’ to compete with products such as Apple M1. Judging from these new details, it seems that Qualcomm is finally taking the future of Windows 10 on ARM seriously, especially after the successful release of Apple M1.
