Microsoft has declared that it is changing the way the Edge browser is updated on macOS, making it easier for everyone to get updates.
Now, the macOS version of the Edge browser uses Microsoft AutoUpdate that is usually used to update Office applications. Of course, Microsoft has listened to the feedback and will adapt its work on other platforms to Edge.
But three key feedback points were pointed out. One is that using AutoUpdate is very confusing, because it is mainly for Office apps, and you may require to wait for the update to complete before you can get the Edge update.
The content displayed in edge://settings/help and AutoUpdate is not always the same. Finally, the update experience is not fast. When you restart the browser, you must wait until the updated app is complete before you can open it again.
The Edge browser will update silently in the background. If you restart the browser to apply the update, it will restart immediately. The Edge browser on macOS will also work this way from now on, so Edge will no longer be updated by AutoUpdate but will update itself.
For now, this change is available in Edge Canary on Intel-based Mac computers and can be enabled by turning on Flag. In addition, this feature will soon be adapted to Apple’s Silicon version of Mac.
