Microsoft published an article on its official website yesterday, introducing the recently launched disk cache compression technology in the Edge browser. Microsoft said that starting with the Edge 102 version, the Edge browser has supported automatic compression of the disk cache to improve performance and reduce disk usage.
The Edge team’s goal is to provide the best-performing browser on Windows and other platforms. When a browser uses too many resources, it not only affects the browsing experience but also slows down the entire system.

However, when it comes to performance optimization, Edge teams often need to balance what to optimize, as optimizing one resource often increases usage of another. One of these is disk caching, a technology that allows browsers to store resources fetched from the Web so that they can be quickly accessed later when needed. The more cache, the more likely it is that the requested resource will be fetched from disk, generally faster than fetching the same resource from the network.
On the other hand, the size of the disk cache is also a concern, especially on devices that are low on disk space, where an unlimited cache can lead to running out of disk space. To prevent the browser cache from taking up all available disk space, Edge already supports throttling disk cache usage based on available space.
Microsoft said that the Edge browser will support compressed caches to save disk space. Starting with Edge 102, the Edge browser automatically compresses the disk cache on eligible devices to ensure compression doesn’t degrade performance.
