Samsung 980 NVMe SSD leaked, sequential reading of 3500MB/s

Samsung will debut the 980 PRO series of M.2 NVMe solid-state hard drives with PCIe 4.0×4 channels in 2020, with a read speed of up to 7000MB/s. Samsung will launch 980 non-Pro suffix solid-state drives on March 30, using PCIe 3.0×4 channels.

Unlike the past, the naming of this series of solid-state drives does not include the EVO suffix. It is not clear whether there will be a 980 EVO product line.

The detailed information and price of the Samsung 980 solid-state hard drive have been exposed by German e-commerce companies in advance. Prior to this, the price of Intel’s 11th-generation Core desktop processor was also leaked to German e-commerce companies.

The 980 series products give a total of 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB capacity options. The hard disk is manufactured with 136-layer V-NAND TLC flash memory particles, supports the NVMe 1.4 protocol, and has the SLC simulation cache acceleration function.

This series of SSD has a sequential read speed of 3500MB/s, a sequential write speed of 3000MB/s, a 4KN QD32 random read rate of 500,000 IOPS, and a 4KB QD1 random write rate of 480,000 IOPS.

Compared with the 970Evo Plus currently on sale, the sequential write speed of Samsung 980 series hard drives has decreased, and the random read and write speed has also decreased to a certain extent.

The sequential read and write speeds of 970Evo Plus are 3500MB/s and 3300MB/s, and the random read and write scores are 620,000 IOPS and 560,000 IOPS.

Samsung 980 series SSD supports AES 256-bit, TCG/Opal IEEE 1667 encryption, and the difference from previous products is that there is no onboard independent DRAM cache.

According to German e-commerce information, the 250G version of the 980 series is priced at about 541 yuan, 500GB is priced at about 697 yuan, and 1TB is priced at 1161 yuan. For comparison, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB version is priced at 1,399 yuan.
