As per the latest report, Apple is planning to provide an important new privacy label feature for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. It will require the company to obtain permission before tracking users across other apps and websites. Although Apple did not provide details on when this feature will be unveiled, it seems that early basic work has already begun.
There are two aspects to privacy features. First, users will be able to access privacy controls under the “Privacy” menu of the “Settings” app. Here, users will be able to see which apps have the necessary permissions to track them and revoke or grant permissions when necessary.
After this feature is launched, users will also see a pop-up message when they first open the app. Users will see notifications for new apps and apps already on the device. This pop-up window allows companies such as Facebook to explain to users why they want to enable privacy tracking.
Earlier, Facebook has strongly criticized this new feature, saying it will affect small businesses and damage their ability to reach new customers. Apple refuted this criticism, saying that the feature does not require Facebook to change the way it tracks users, but only requires permission.
According to MacRumors reports, some users are now seeing tracking prompt pop-ups on iPhones, but only for certain applications. For example, a user received a pop-up window when opening the NBA app, stating that the app was requesting permission to “track your activities on other companies’ apps and websites.”
Apple originally hoped to launch this new privacy feature in September this year as part of iOS 14, but eventually delayed the launch time to give developers more preparation time. However, the company has repeatedly emphasized this feature and promised to launch it in early 2021.
After stably releasing the official version of iOS 14.3 to everyone, Apple released the first developer preview version and the public beta version of iOS 14.4 last week.
However, some iOS users reported that they also saw this popup on iOS 14.3 and iOS 14.2. This may mean that Apple is implementing server-side changes, or it may mean that some developers have already started implementing the feature before the official “release”.
