Qualcomm likely to become sole processor supplier for Samsung Galaxy S23 series

Qualcomm announced to strengthen strategic cooperation with Samsung to help Samsung Galaxy devices provide a better consumer experience. The two parties agreed to extend the 3G, 4G, 5G, and 6G technology licensing agreements until the end of 2030, which is another seven-year extension.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in the transcript of Qualcomm’s third-quarter 2022 earnings call, Qualcomm said, “What I can say right now is that we were at 75% usage on the Galaxy S22 prior to the deal. You should take into account that We’ll be better off with the Galaxy S23 and newer.”

Qualcomm also said, “This is a multi-year agreement and we support Samsung’s devices globally.” On July 9 this year, Ming-Chi Kuo said, “Thanks to the next-generation flagship 5G chip SM8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) manufactured by TSMC at 4nm, Qualcomm is likely to become the sole processor supplier for Samsung Galaxy S23 (S22 shipment ratio).

Ming-Chi Kuo said, “The Galaxy S23 may not use Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 2300 chip because it can’t compete with the SM8550 in every way. The SM8550 is optimized for TSMC’s design rules, so it’s more computationally and power efficient than the SM8450 (Snapdragon) Dragon 8 Gen 1) / SM8475 (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1) has a clear advantage.

Qualcomm / SM8550 will gain more market share in the high-end Android market in 2023. The economic recession will have less impact on the high-end market, so market share  growth of Qualcomm and TSMC will be a significant benefit.”

Qualcomm has previously announced that the 2022 Snapdragon Summit will be held for three days from November 15th to 17th. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is expected to be released. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the successor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It will be manufactured by TSMC and still uses the 4nm process. MediaTek will also release Dimensity 9000/8000 iterative chips, which will also use TSMC’s 4nm process.
