Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory officially open

According to the latest report, Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory officially open on March 22, and the first batch of German-made Model Y will also begin to be delivered. Looking back at the construction of the Berlin factory can be described as twists and turns.

On December 7 last year, the start of production at Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory was delayed due to another postponement of the original hearing. It is understood that Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory project had a dispute with German environmental groups at the beginning.

Moreover, groundwater pollution has been one of the main concerns, and German environmental groups also believe that the Tesla factory may affect the quality of life of nearby residents.

Lawyers representing several local environmental groups revealed that environmental groups are focused on keeping Tesla in compliance with local environmental standards and regulations. The dispute between the two sides intensified and Tesla delayed the start of production.

On February 23 this year, Tesla’s official news showed that the current factory production line is in place, and pre-production test vehicles began at the end of last year. But now Tesla is still waiting for local approvals in Germany because Tesla’s Berlin project cannot increase production and sell cars without a commercial operation permit.

Until March 6, the German state of Brandenburg said on Friday Tesla received conditional approval for its German Gigafactory near Berlin, ending the 5 billion-euro ($5.5 billion) milestone project months of delay. But the 536-page conditional build permit for Tesla doesn’t mean the U.S. electric car pioneer can start production right away. It must first demonstrate that it meets a number of conditions, including water and air pollution control.

On March 9, Tesla’s Berlin plant made substantial progress. Less than a week after it was approved, Tesla has started sending emails to German customers who ordered the Model Y asking them to complete their orders, media reported. The emails ask customers to choose a delivery location and fill in their payment method, and the orders show that the delivery date is still an estimated March 2022 date.
