Sony promotes environmental protection of the outer packaging of earphones

Sony announced that the headset packaging solution adopted by Sony Corporation and Sony Group Corporation has won the Japan Packaging Design Association Award and the Electronic Product Packaging Award in the 2021 Japan Packaging Design Competition.

Moreover, Sony stated that it is changing the outer packaging of existing headphone models from plastic to paper. The outer packaging of MDR-EX15AP has been redesigned to reduce the total amount of plastic from approximately 96% to less than 5%.

Sony said that the single carton design used PP (plastic) laminated before and could not be recycled. Now it has been changed to wear-resistant varnish so that the carton can be recycled. Except for the label, the WF-1000XM4 packaging is entirely made of “primary mixed materials”.

The “primary mixed material” is developed from a unique combination of bamboo, sugarcane fiber, and recycled paper. It is a recyclable, durable, and strong paper material that does not use any plastic components. Sony plans to use the material to package more products.

Furthermore, Sony is also reducing the use of plastic on mobile phones, for example, replacing the plastic film layer of Xperia 1 III with wear-resistant varnish, and replacing the plastic sleeve of the USB cable with a paper sleeve.

Sony stated that the “Green Management 2025” (GM2025), which began in April 2021, aims to achieve a five-year mid-term environmental goal of the “Sony Towards Zero Load” (to 2050) plan. GM2025 is committed to gradually reducing the amount of plastic in portable product packaging until the use of plastic is completely eliminated.
