Yesterday, the Linux Foundation announced that the Linux 5.10.5 kernel was officially released, and all users of the 5.10 kernel series must upgrade.
Linux 5.10.5 regained an issue from October last year, removing accelerated scrolling from the Linux Frame Buffer Console (FBCON) because it was full of bugs and was not widely used.
In the FBCON code, bugs are constantly found, especially during the accelerated scrolling process. In view of these code issues, and these codes are not widely used, it was decided to delete them.
The main user of FBCON accelerated scrolling is the open-source Nouveau (NVIDIA), the driver. Additionally, OMAPDRM and GMA500 are the only drivers that support frame buffer console accelerated scrolling.
Now, as long as all FBCON accelerated scrolling code is deleted, further code cleaning can be performed.
Linux 5.11 already contains a patch that gives up speeding up rolling, and this release of Linux 5.10.5 will port this change down to the current stable version of the long-term support kernel (LTS).
It is reported that the Linux 5.10 support cycle will last until 2026 that is one year longer than the Linux 5.4 LTS kernel.
