Samsung 3nm process of yield rate is still to improve

According to the latest report, Samsung Electronics’ 3nm process technology initially started to produce chips on June 30. It is the first in the industry to use this process technology to manufacture wafers, and the first batch of chips manufactured also started shipping on the 25th of this month.

Although Samsung Electronics adopts the 3nm process technology of the full-surround gate transistor structure, it is the first in the industry to mass-produce and has begun to ship, but according to the information disclosed by relevant persons in the semiconductor field, the yield rate of their process technology is still not high. There is a lot of room for improvement.

South Korean media quoted an expert as saying that when using the 3nm process technology, Samsung Electronics’ current main task is still to improve the yield. The expert also said that Samsung Electronics’ 3nm process technology has reached a profitable level, and the yield rate needs to be increased to 80%-90%. It seems that Samsung Electronics will take a long time to reach this level.

Although Samsung Electronics is the world’s second-largest foundry business, its share in the global foundry market has been much lower than that of TSMC for many years. They also have high hopes for the 3nm process technology, but if the yield rate is not optimistic, it may affect the market prospects of their process, and there are variables in whether they can narrow the gap with TSMC. The sources also mentioned in the report that some media believe that Samsung Electronics will not pose a threat to TSMC.
