Microsoft Defender offline antivirus only 60.3% effective

Antivirus software testing company AV-Comparatives today released its March 2022 report. According to the report, Microsoft Defender, the security defense software that comes with Windows, was rated as one of the worst offline antivirus products because it was only 60.3% effective when it was not connected to the Internet.

Meanwhile, G DATA took the top spot with a 98.6% efficiency rate. This means that Microsoft Defender relies heavily on cloud-based protection. The following figure is a complete comparison list of offline and online detection rates and protection rates of major mainstream security protection software:

Moreover,  low offline efficiency does not mean it is bad, because the online detection and protection rate of Microsoft Defender is one of the best security software. AV-Comparatives is a bit blurry about the distinction between protection and detection, they describe it as: The file detection test we performed in previous years was a detection-only test. That is, it merely tests the ability of the security program to detect malicious programs before the file is executed.

Today’s malware protection tests take into account not only detection rate but also its protection capability, that is, the antivirus’ ability to prevent malicious programs from making any actual changes to the system.

In addition to malware protection tests, AV-Comparatives also publishes data from so-called real-world protection tests, which are shown in the graph below. Here’s what the company has to say about “how to tell the difference between the two”:

In the Malware Protection Test, malicious files are simply executed on the computer system. Whereas in real-world testing, the carrier is the network, in the Malware Protection Test, the carrier can be a network drive, USB, or cover situations where the malware is already on disk.

Finally, AV-Comparatives also announced the awards for various tested anti-virus programs, and Microsoft Defender also received the highest-rated ADVANCED+ award here.
