Real-world emergencies may require commanders to make immediate decisions about who gets help and who doesn’t, but in most cases, decisions are not obvious and people can make the wrong decisions.

A new DARPA program, called In the Moment, will develop new technologies to make difficult decisions by analyzing real-time data. The broader context of this project is that the U.S. military is increasingly relying on technology to reduce human error, and DARPA believes that removing human bias from the decision-making process will “save lives.”

According to DARPA, it will take two years to train a new AI system, and an additional 18 months of preparation before the new system goes live. Sally A. Applin, an expert on artificial intelligence and ethics, said, “I think this will set a precedent for machines that decide life and death.”

Moreover, In the Moment is just one part of the problem with adopting artificial intelligence technology in the decision-making process, other problems are related to building trust between people.
