Microsoft exposed 20% of gamers use only touch controls

According to the latest report, in the past year, Microsoft has been steadily adding custom Xbox touch controls, and more than 100 games can be streamed to Android and iOS phones to use its Xbox cloud games ( xCloud) service.

Although these controls may be gimmicks to some people, Microsoft now reveals that 20% of players use these touch controls exclusively to play games.

Our Xbox cloud gaming users use touch as their only way to play games,” explained Monty Hernandez, Xbox’s senior project manager. “So, it is important for us that our touch-enabled games are relevant, and most importantly, play well with touch controls.”

This is an astonishing statistic, and even 30% of players in individual games use touch control completely.

  • “Hades”

  • “New Super Lucky Fox”

  • “Liulong 7: Where the Light and Darkness Are”

  • “Crimson Knot”

  • “Dragon Quest 11”

  • “Minecraft: Dungeon”

  • “Football Manager 2022 Xbox Edition”

Considering the usage, it is not surprising that game developers have been keen to add these custom touch controls in the past year. Microsoft has made it relatively easy, allowing game developers to build on GitHub’s sample layout, which can be customized for each game.

Hernandez said: “We have seen that among different types of games provided by Xbox cloud games, the usage of touch-controlled games has increased by an average of 2 times. Many Xbox cloud games now have some impressive Touch control, with custom styles and icons helping players who purely use touch screens.”

Xbox touch control started from supporting “Minecraft: Dungeon” and expanded to 10 other games one month after the initial launch of xCloud. Microsoft has also been using Xbox touch control for its dual-screen Surface Duo phone, turning its Android-supported device into a Nintendo 3DS with Xbox games.

There are now more than 100 games that support these customized touch controls, and players are keen to use them. We expect to see more games supporting Xbox touch controls in the coming months.
