Toyota plans to install a hydrogen-fueled engine on a Corolla Sport-based car and will hold the NAPAC Fuji SUPER TEC 24-hour race from May 21 to 23. The third race of the Super Durable Series 2021 Powered by Hankook began and was put into use as a participating vehicle of “ORC ROOKIE Racing”.
The fuel cell (FC) used in Toyota “MIRAI” and other vehicles chemically reacts hydrogen with oxygen in the air to generate electricity to drive the engine, while the hydrogen fuel engine is a gasoline engine.
Basically, change the fuel supply system and injection system to generate power by burning hydrogen. Except for the extremely small amount of engine oil combustion components that also occur when using gasoline engines, no carbon dioxide is produced during driving.
The hydrogen fuel of a hydrogen fuel engine burns faster than gasoline, has good responsiveness, and has excellent environmental performance. Along with this, it can also realize the “joy of driving the car” including the sound and vibration of the car.
This hydrogen fuel engine also uses the technology polished in sports racing such as GR YARIS that went on the market in September. In terms of safety, the technology and capabilities accumulated in the development of fuel cell vehicles and the sale of MIRAI are also utilized.
Toyota will polish the performance of hydrogen fuel engines under the harsh conditions of motorsports, and contribute to the realization of a sustainable and rich mobility society.
