Microsoft Edge browser 88 stable version update will arrive on January 2021

Microsoft Edge browser 88 stable version update will arrive in January 2021, introducing a large number of new features, such as sleep tabs, vertical tabs, PDF document reading view, Reset Microsoft Edge sync data.

Some new features include:

  • Sleep tab: Reduce the system resources (such as memory, CPU) used by the background tab to improve browser performance. Users can set policies to prevent tags from going to sleep, and configure the sleep time of tags.
  • Starting from Edge 88, users will be able to view PDF documents in a single-page or two-page book view. If users need to change the view, they can do so by clicking the “Page View” button in the toolbar.
  • Now, users who log in through Edge on MacOS or lower levels of Windows (7, 8, 8.1) will automatically log in to websites that are configured to allow single sign-on with a Microsoft account. (For example, bing.com, office.com, msn.com, outlook.com).
  • Vertical tabs: As the number of tabs increases, the title of the website is cut off, the tab control is more troublesome, and the display area of each tab is reduced, which will increase the difficulty of users’ work. The vertical label allows the user to move the label to one side, and the vertically aligned icon and long title make it easier to identify and switch.
  • The vertical tabs also provide more space to help users quickly select, close, and sort the tabs, making the management of multiple tabs easier. When users use vertical tabs and want to focus and view more web pages, they can always collapse the pane, just hover to expand it when they want to interact with a particular tab.

  • Microsoft introduced a method to reset your Microsoft Edge sync data from within the product. This ensures that your data is cleared from Microsoft services and resolves certain product issues that previously required support tickets.
  • Starting from Microsoft Edge v88, Microsoft will perform password checks based on the leaked database, and if matching user data is found, it will alert the user.
  • Support for the legacy FTP protocol has been removed from Microsoft Edge. Attempting to navigate to the FTP link will cause the browser to instruct the operating system to open an external application to handle the FTP link. Alternatively, IT administrators can configure Microsoft Edge to use IE mode for sites that rely on the FTP protocol.
  • Starting from Microsoft Edge v88, Microsoft began to provide the ability to authenticate and switch sites on MacOS through work profiles.
  • Starting from Microsoft Edge Beta v88, the features and support of Adobe Flash will be removed.

Microsoft developers are already on vacation, recent updates have decreased, but a new major version update will be ushered in after the year.
