Samsung Soundbar issues after new update

Samsung’s top soundbar, the HW-Q990D, is causing headaches for some users after a recent update went wrong. This week, the company released new software that’s leaving the popular Dolby Atmos soundbar unusable for many. People are talking about it everywhere—on Samsung’s forums, Reddit, and AVSForum—showing just how big this problem has become. It’s not just one area either; folks in the United States, Austria, the Philippines, Malaysia, and beyond are all dealing with the same mess.
Users say their soundbars won’t respond at all. Normally, a factory reset fixes things, but not this time. Even the SmartThings app, which controls the device, can’t connect. The soundbar turns on, but it gets stuck on the TV eARC setting and doesn’t play any sound.
The trouble seems to come from the latest update, version 1020.7. Since many Q990D units download updates on their own, lots of people are now stuck with this glitch. If you own a Samsung soundbar, it’s a good idea to turn off automatic updates for now until this gets sorted out. A few people with other models, like the HW-Q800D and HW-S801D, have mentioned similar issues, but most complaints are about the Q990D. It’s a highly rated soundbar, so this hiccup is a real letdown.
The Verge contacted Samsung to find out more. Some users have been told to send their soundbars in for repairs, which sounds like a hassle. Hopefully, Samsung figures out a simpler fix soon—maybe even a new update to undo the damage. Could this be resolved quickly? We’ll keep you posted. For now, if your soundbar’s still working, you might want to hold off on updating it.
