India announce RISC-V processor’s development plan

According to the latest report, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, recently announced the “Digital India RISC-V Processor” (DIR-V) development plan.

The goal is to independently develop microprocessors based on the open-source RISC-V architecture. Tape out by December 2023. Chandrasekhar said that the DIR-V plan will integrate the resources of research institutions and domestic and foreign enterprises, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will also join the RISC-V Foundation to build India into a global highland for RISC-V technology and industry.

Moreover, Indian institutions are currently working on the design of two RISC-V processors, SHAKTI and VEGA. The former is expected to be supported by Intel’s foundry services and manufactured in a 22-nanometer process.
