Microsoft released latest Windows 11 preview version Build 22593

Microsoft today released the latest Windows 11 preview version Build 22593. For Dev and Beta channels. Brings some feature improvements, bug fixes, and more.

Here are the highlights:

• Microsoft has received a lot of feedback on desktop watermarks from Windows Insiders in the Beta channel. It is normal to see this watermark on the user’s desktop after updating to the latest preview version. It does not change the permissions of the user’s device. Note, however, that these are preview builds and do expire, so it’s important for users to stay updated with the latest version released by Microsoft.

• This release includes only a handful of changes and improvements but includes a nice set of fixes that will improve the overall experience for beta testers on their devices.

• Microsoft has also added some new known issues.

[General]

• Fixed several issues affecting explorer.exe reliability in recent releases.

[Mission Board]

• Fixed an issue where the app’s icon would unexpectedly animate from the top left when launching a new app.

• Improved performance of rearranging taskbar icons.

• Addresses an issue in previous releases that caused duplicate app icons to appear after closing and reopening an app.

• Icons no longer overlap the date and time on the secondary display if you have a lot of apps open.

• The taskbar will no longer disappear when you type a search on a full-screen window.

• Fixed an issue that caused icon spacing to be inverted, which should get larger when switching to and out of tablet-optimized taskbars, and vice versa.

• The tablet-optimized taskbar will now remain visible on full-screen apps when expanded and only hide when collapsed.

• If the current language has multiple keyboards, the input indicator will now show only one line of text when the tablet-optimized taskbar is collapsed so that it will not be cropped.

• Fixed a crash that caused the taskbar to get stuck in the tablet-optimized taskbar view.

• Settings now more consistently remember the taskbar’s auto-hide setting.

• Alleviated an issue where some app icons in the system tray were expected to flicker but didn’t work that way.

• Fixed an issue with some applications where mouse movement events were not being passed to icons in the system tray.

• Addressed an issue that caused notification center startup reliability to drop in recent builds.

• Resolved an issue that caused Notification Center and its context to sometimes display the wrong color text for the system theme, making it unreadable.

• Updated the names of some months in the Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese lunar calendars to be more accurate.

[Start Menu]

• Updated the design of folders in the Start menu to make them a bit larger, making it easier to see the highlighted app icon in the folder without having to open it.

• Fixed an issue where if a folder created in Start was in the same location as the one that was deleted, it would display the old name.

• If you use the keyboard to name a folder in Start, you can now use a tab to exit without pressing the Esc key.

• Fixed an issue that didn’t work after WIN + X when using the keyboard to select options. Eliminating WIN+X is now more consistent.

• Fixed an issue where the prompt did not appear in front when launching Windows Terminal as an administrator from the Start context menu (WIN + X).

• The search icon in the taskbar no longer flashes unexpectedly when closing the Start menu.

[Search]

• Made some improvements to help users with very many indexed items resolve search indexer threading and memory usage issues.

• Fixed an issue affecting search reliability in recent builds (entering information in the search window or Start, nothing happens).

• Another fix to help with an issue where a search popup could get stuck on a transparent area on the screen.

[File Explorer]

• Improved performance of loading home pages in File Explorer.

• Fixed a scaling issue where context menus could be unexpectedly sized when invoked on systems with mixed DPI displays.

• Resolved an issue where the “Show More Options” entry in the context menu did not work for items in the Navigation Pane of File Explorer (for example, right-clicking on This PC).

• Made some work to help reduce the chance of seeing app items “loading” in the context menu.

• Fixed an issue where the “Open in Windows Terminal” context menu option would be unexpectedly missing for secondary users in some cases.

• The open suggestion results displayed when entering a search term into the search box in File Explorer should now work as expected.

• A potential issue that caused the address bar to be inaccessible under certain circumstances has been mitigated.

• Mitigates an issue that caused increased startup times for certain file types in previous releases.

[Widget]

• Fixed an issue where sometimes pinned widgets were placed on top instead of below other pinned widgets when pinned from the feed stream.

• Fixed an issue where some users were experiencing incorrect rendering of widgets in fixed sections after rearranging widgets in the widget panel.

[Enter]

• Fixed an issue that prevented several input UI surfaces from showing after explorer.exe crashed in recent builds, including the emoji panel, candidate window, clipboard history, and touch keyboard.

• Resolved an issue where Narrator was silent when launching the emoji panel in some cases, such as the search box not showing.

• Fixed an issue that caused custom theme changes in Settings > Personalization > Text Input to sometimes not save correctly.

• Resolved some color issues with the touch keyboard, including a possible mix of dark and light colors on the touch keyboard after changing from dark to light mode.

• Updated the touch keyboard buttons to always show the touch keyboard instead of hiding it when visible.

• When using Chinese (Traditional), return the backspace key to the small layout of the touch keyboard.

• Improved reliability of launching the touch keyboard on the login screen.

• It should now be possible to use the Japanese IME’s context menu on the login screen to change the transition mode.

• Fixed an issue where a Chinese (Traditional) IME would only show 5 suggested related phrases when they should be showing 9.

• Fixed an issue where if a custom background image was set under Settings > Personalization > Text Input, the preview would not show how it would look in the Chinese (Simplified) candidate window.

• Resolved rendering issues in the corners of the IME toolbar.

• Fixed an issue where the IME toolbar would not hide and display correctly when using previous versions of the Japanese IME.

• Improved reliability of voice input.

• Updated the voice typing error message “Voice typing is limited on this app” to “Some features of voice typing may not work on this app” so basic voice typing still works.

• Fixed an issue that caused some voice input commands to not work, such as “scratch it” for Chinese (simplified).

• Addressed an issue where, in recent builds, the “Disable touch when using pen” setting under Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Pen & Windows Ink would sometimes arbitrarily not take effect on first boot.

• Fixed an issue that caused the Get-InstalledLanguage and Install-Language PowerShell commands to fail unexpectedly in some languages ​​with error 0x8007023E.

[Set up]

• If keyboard focus is on a collapsible area chevron on a settings page, such as the Snapshot Window section under System > Multitasking, the area can now be expanded and collapsed using the left and right arrows.

[Windowing]

• Alleviates an issue that could cause explorer.exe to crash when using ALT + Tab.

• Fixed an issue where the ALT+Tab keyboard focus outline was sometimes smaller than the displayed thumbnail.

• Fixed a potential DWM issue that caused a crash when using touch gestures from both sides of the screen.

• Fixed DWM crash when rotating the screen.

• Alleviated some lag issues caused when resizing two side-by-side apps in some cases.

• Fixed an issue where Snap Assist could unexpectedly disappear if the initial window did not fit the size of the selected area. Now, when the minimum window size of the initial grab window is larger than the selected area, the grab assist area is resized accordingly.

• The close button no longer overlaps the window title if the task view is invoked with a touch.

• Hovering over a tooltip with the desktop name will no longer accidentally dismiss the desktop popup.

• Use drag-and-drop to rearrange your desktops from the desktop popup, no longer leaving thumbnails of desktops you move on the screen.

[Voice access]

• Fixed a crash that affected voice access reliability.

• Resolved an issue that prevented the correct download of voice models for voice access.

[Live subtitles]

• Addresses a potential issue that could cause Live Captions to show download errors even though the download has actually been completed successfully.

• Live Captions now remembers the selected cross-time location setting.

• Resolved an issue where the position of live subtitles became floating when entering full screen, but the last position was still incorrectly displayed in the settings.

• Removed live caption notification about playing audio from multiple apps as it popped up repeatedly during use.

• The border of the Live Caption window will now match the style of all other borders in the contrast theme.

[Narrator]

• Fixed an issue that caused sporadic interruptions in a natural speech in recent builds.

• A narrator will now pronounce the word minutes with the duration of the focus option listed in the settings.

• Fixed an issue that caused Narrator to read dialogue buttons incorrectly in scan mode.

[Task Manager]

• Removed the back panel (colored square) where UWP app icons show up in Task Manager.

• Alleviated an issue where one side of the view button didn’t seem to do anything.

• Fixed an issue that caused the live update rate to be set to pause by itself. Please note that if affected by this, after upgrading to this version, users will need to make a one-time modification to restore the settings to their preferred update speed.

[Other]

• Resolved an issue that resulted in a black screen when playing some fullscreen games with Auto HDR enabled (although interactive).

• Fixed a memory leak in the connected device platform user service.

• The resulting volume and brightness popups will no longer display the outline of the focused window over them when using the hardware keys.

• If you press WIN+Alt+K when a supported application is not running, the popup text displayed now says “No supporting application is using mic mute” instead of “Mic mute is not available”, which is now more articulate.

• Fixed an issue that caused unexpected errors to be displayed in Event Viewer when conhost.exe was activated.

Known Issues

[General]

• Microsoft will not be offering new builds to Windows Insiders on Lenovo PCs in the Chinese market this time.

• Windows Insiders running Windows 10 who join the Dev or Beta channel to get the latest build may encounter download error code 0xc8000402 when trying to download the latest build. As a workaround, please join the Release preview channel first, install Windows 11 (Build 22000.xxxx) from there, then switch to the Dev or Beta channel to receive the latest closed beta preview. Microsoft is aware of this issue and will fix it in an upcoming release.

• Microsoft is investigating reports that some Insiders experienced an issue with explorer.exe crashing repeatedly in the latest builds, failing to load successfully. This release includes a mitigation that may help some beta folks experiencing this.

• When opening the Group Policy Editor, an Administrative Templates error pops up. Click “Ok” to dismiss and continue using the Group Policy Editor normally.

• Devices using Windows Information Protection (formerly EDP) policies will not be able to access controlled data on this version through protected applications such as Outlook, Word, Microsoft Edge, etc. Users are advised to pause updates under Settings > Windows Update until a new Insider Preview build is released with a fix available. If users already have Build 22593 installed, they can roll back to the previous build to restore expected data access.

[Mission Board]

• The taskbar doesn’t always automatically collapse when launching an app or clicking outside the expanded taskbar on a 2-in-1.

• Certain areas of the OS don’t yet track the height of the extended taskbar on 2-in-1s, so you might see overlapping components.

• Microsoft is fixing an issue where hovering over some app icons in the system tray would not show previews or tooltips.

[File Explorer]

• Microsoft is fixing issues with icon sizes, visual errors, and text cropping in pop-ups showing OneDrive storage.

• Renaming a file using the right-click option in the file manager crashes explorer.exe. As a workaround, click to highlight the file and use the Rename button in the File Explorer command bar to complete the renaming process.

[Widget]

• The widget panel may not open successfully when using gestures from the side of the screen. If affected, temporarily click the widget icon in the taskbar instead.

[The internet]

• Microsoft is investigating reports of network connectivity issues when connecting to certain virtual private networks in previous releases.

[Live subtitles]

• Some full-screen applications (such as video players) cannot see live captions.

• Some applications located near the top of the screen, closed before running Live Captions, will be restarted behind the Live Captions window at the top. When an application has focus, use the system menu (ALT + Spacebar) to move the application’s window further down.

• When Live Caption is on top, the very top of a maximized application (for example, the title bar’s window management buttons) cannot be touched.
