Huawei 5nm chips had to switch, this will also affect TSMC 5nm capacity utilization

In the year 2020, TSMC is the world’s first mass production of 5nm process, the starting products are mainly Huawei’s Kirin 9000, Apple A14 processor, but 9 Yue 15 after day, Huawei 5nm chips had to switch, this will also affect TSMC 5nm capacity utilization.

Previously, TrendForce’s research report pointed out that after Huawei’s HiSilicon’s withdrawal, Apple’s A14 series chips could not completely make up for HiSilicon’s vacancies, which would cause TSMC’s 5nm capacity utilization rate to drop to around 90%.

However, the capacity vacancy is only temporary. It is expected that from the second half of 2021 to 2022, AMD and other customers who have demand for high-performance computing will follow up the 5nm process, and TSMC’s production capacity will face a tight situation.

Therefore, the latest news said that TSMC will increase investment to expand 5nm production capacity and is expected to reach the level of 90,000 wafers per month next year.

Regarding this rumor, TSMC’s official response is very low-key, emphasizing that it will not disclose the production capacity of individual factories and processes.

TSMC’s 5nm process was mass-produced in the middle of this year. Q3 contributed 8% of its revenue, and it is expected to contribute 8% of its revenue for the whole year, boosting TSMC’s performance.
