Samsung might make more iPhone screens as BOE struggles

Samsung

Samsung was the first company to make OLED screens for iPhones. Over time, Apple began to share some of these orders with LG Display and then with BOE from China. However, BOE is now reportedly having trouble with quality, pushing Apple to give more work to Samsung.

Samsung Could Get More iPhone Screen Orders Due to BOE’s Quality Problems

According to a report from OLED-Info, BOE has been finding it hard to meet Apple’s quality expectations for its LTPS OLED screens used in non-Pro iPhone models like the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, 15 Plus, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus.

Since early 2024, BOE has only managed to supply about 7-8 million screens, which is much less than the 40 million Apple ordered. It’s expected these problems might need at least six weeks to fix. Experts in the display industry think Apple will shift most of these orders back to Samsung Display.

Although Apple also gets screens from LG Display, Samsung’s local competitor, it seems Apple won’t give LG more orders since LG is mainly producing LTPO OLED screens for the Pro versions of the iPhone like the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This isn’t the first challenge for BOE; they’ve had quality issues before, like in 2023 when there were light leakage problems around the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

If these reports hold true, it could mean more business for Samsung Display. This comes at a good time for Samsung Electronics, which has been facing profit drops due to problems with its high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI systems.
