Super Slim Phones: Galaxy S25 Edge and iPhone 17 Air battle for thinness

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge

Samsung unveiled a sneak peek of their upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge at their latest event. This phone is all set to hit the market in the coming months, boasting a remarkably thin profile.

The buzz around the Galaxy S25 Edge suggests it will be just 5.84mm thick. This drastic reduction in thickness was inspired by the anticipated iPhone 17 Air, which reportedly pushed Samsung to rethink its design strategy. Originally, Samsung had a plan for a 6.4mm thick model, but they decided to go even slimmer.

The dimensions of the Galaxy S25 Edge are expected to be around 158.2 x 75.5 x 5.84 mm. There’s a bit of confusion because Samsung tested two different versions before settling on this one.

To make the phone this thin, Samsung had to make some sacrifices. They’ve dropped the telephoto lens, leaving the phone with just a dual-camera system: a 200MP main camera and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. Also, to keep the phone slim, the battery capacity has been cut down to below 4000mAh.

Here are some key changes and design highlights:

  • Super Slim Body: Now at 5.84mm, thinner than the initial 6.4mm prototype.
  • Camera Compromise: Switched to a dual-camera setup without the telephoto lens.
  • Camera Design: The camera bump is designed to look less noticeable with an oblong shape.

On the other side, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be even thinner, potentially between 5.5mm and 6.0mm. It might only have one rear camera and could opt for a single speaker instead of stereo to maintain its slim profile.

Both companies are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in smartphone design, focusing on sleekness at the cost of some traditional features.
