Future iPhones will have been made with ceramic materials: Report

As a handheld device, the feel of mobile phones has always attracted much attention. An Apple patent shows a zirconia ceramic material that could be used in future watch models, Forbes reported yesterday. Most importantly, the material may also be used in the iPhone, which means that Apple may launch a ceramic version of the iPhone in the future, greatly improving the iPhone’s feel.

The patent, titled “Electronic Device with Textured Zirconia-Based Assemblies,” describes in Apple that zirconia-based components can provide a matte appearance to the exterior surfaces of electronic devices. Although the patent does not give full details of the zirconia-based components, the patent indicates that the zirconia-based components may be composed of ceramics, such as partially stabilized zirconia ceramics or alumina-toughened zirconia ceramics.

Therefore, Apple may use ceramic material instead of tempered glass in the future to launch an iPhone with a ceramic body. In addition, the matte appearance means that the material may be used in the iPhone Pro series models, and the standard iPhone will probably not have a ceramic body.

Moreover, zirconia refers to zirconium dioxide, which has physical properties such as high hardness, high toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature resistance, and is the main raw material for artificial drills.

Previously, the ceramic body of Xiaomi MIX 4 used high-purity nano-zirconia composite material. Compared with traditional ceramic materials, this ceramic material reduced the weight of the ceramic body of the Xiaomi MIX 4 by 30%. This allows the machine to retain the ceramic texture and reduce the weight of the whole device.
