Chip shortage may be last until 2023: BMW

According to the latest report, German carmaker BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said in an interview with the “Neue Zurich Zeitung” on Monday that the shortage of semiconductors may remain a problem in the auto industry in 2023.

“We’re still at the peak of the chip shortage,” Zipse was quoted as saying, “I expect we’ll start to see improvement by next year at the latest, but we’ll still have to deal with a fundamental shortage in 2023.”

Moreover, BMW said at its annual press conference in mid-March that it expected the chip shortage to last until 2022. Zipse’s claim echoes a similar statement Saturday by Volkswagen AG Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz, who said he did not expect the supply of chips to meet demand until 2024.
