It is understood that this is the first trial of this type among a British telecom operator, demonstrating the use of Ericsson’s 5G standalone containerized core network architecture and end-to-end automatic orchestration solutions (including 5G RAN slicing), advanced on-demand customizable 5G network slicing, which provides the low latency and high bandwidth experience required for virtual reality use cases.

Moreover, the entire process, from placing an order to creating a network slice carrying live network traffic, took just 30 minutes, proving that telecom operators can roll out newly automated and customized connectivity services faster.

According to reports, network slicing is a very valuable technological advancement. By “slicing” the network and tailoring different slices for different needs, new ideas that would otherwise be impossible can be realized. Carrier networks can be configured to provide new services, ushering in a new era for industries such as gaming, entertainment, and healthcare.
