AMD Radeon software changes CPU settings without user knowledge

According to the latest report, a German publication Igor’s Lab reported a potential anomaly in AMD’s Adrenalin GPU software, which changes CPU settings without the user’s knowledge.

Current speculation is that AMD’s Ryzen Master module was integrated into Adrenalin 22.3.1 or later software, inadvertently allowing the program to manipulate CPU PBO and Precision Boost settings without the user’s permission, the report said.

According to user feedback, this problem only occurs on AMD CPU and graphics card combinations, which are often referred to as “3A” platforms, and only this hardware combination supports the Ryzen Master SDK. Using Intel CPU + AMD graphics card or AMD CPU + Nvidia graphics card is not affected.

Moreover, reports say that for some reason AMD’s Adrenalin software automatically enables the PBO or “CPU OC” setting when applying a GPU profile and overwrites the user’s original setting with an arbitrary setting that may affect the CPU stability.

There are several ways to restore the CPU to its original configuration. The first method is to go into the motherboard’s BIOS and re-enter all CPU settings (disable the PBO if running the defaults).

Furthermore, the second method is to run the Radeon Software Slimmer, which removes the Ryzen Master SDK from the Adrenalin software, preventing the module from adjusting the CPU settings.

The third method is simpler, creating a new tuning profile for the GPU in the Adrenalin software can completely prevent the module from manipulating the PBO settings in the motherboard BIOS.
