Sony Group preparing to release new video game subscription service for PlayStation

Posted on

According to the latest report, citing people familiar with the matter, Sony Group is preparing to launch a new video game subscription service for the PlayStation as early as next week.

The service, code-named Spartacus, has been in development for a long time by Sony to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass has amassed more than 25 million subscribers.

When Spartacus debuts, Sony will release a series of high-profile hits in recent years, the people said. Sony’s new service will combine two of its current services, PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus.

Moreover, consumers will have multiple tiers of packages to choose from, including new games developed in recent years as well as older classics. A Sony spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s unclear how Spartacus charges. Currently, both PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus cost $60 a year, which adds up to $120. That’s about the same price as a standard Game Pass subscription, but slightly less than Game Pass Ultimate, so Sony should have some wiggle room on pricing.

There’s also the issue of account migration, with many users buying PlayStation Plus subscriptions for months or even years. If the service is replaced, how will Sony help these paying customers switch to Spartacus? Similar services may be available from Spartacus, but prices may vary.

The PlayStation has outsold the Xbox in recent years, but Sony has lagged behind Microsoft in its efforts in the streaming game market. Xbox Game Pass offers hundreds of games for just $10 a month.

One of the biggest selling points of Xbox Game Pass is that when games from Microsoft Studios are released globally, they will be added to the Xbox Game Pass service, and subscribers can play immediately, including this year’s highly anticipated Microsoft sci-fi game “Starry Sky” ” (Starfield).

However, Sony could be at a disadvantage here, with its new service not expected to give subscribers access to new games on the day they launch. A person familiar with the matter said that the upcoming “God of War Ragnarök” (God of War Ragnarök) is unlikely to be launched on Sony’s Spartacus platform immediately.
