EU stays investigation of Nvidia’s acquisition of ARM

Nvidia intends to acquire British chip design company ARM. According to information provided by the European Commission, EU antitrust agencies have temporarily suspended investigations into the acquisition because they are waiting for more information.

Originally, the final time set by the European Commission was November 25, and there was nothing unusual about the postponement. Affected by the new crown pandemic, some customers are facing bans and labor shortages, and numbers are difficult to collect. Nvidia is the world’s largest manufacturer of graphics cards and AI chips. Last week, the US FTC also stepped up to block the transaction.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit with the purpose of stopping Nvidia’s $40 billion acquisition of ARM. The FTC said in a statement, “This proposed transaction will enable one of the largest chip manufacturers to control the computing technology and design that its opponents rely on .”

Since its announcement last year, this transaction has faced multiple countries and regions around the world. Regulatory review, FTC’s litigation is the biggest resistance, which may make it impossible to complete.

First, the EU competition agency claimed that the trade would push up prices, reduce choices, and weaken innovation. It was only two months before the US agency spoke out.
