SSD prices for PC dropped first time in 2021

Dragged down by the decline in the price of core component NAND flash memory, the price of SSDs for PCs, which has risen for one year in a row, ushered in the first decline, and the industry expects the decline to continue into the first quarter of next year.

According to the latest report, the wholesale price of TLC 256GB, a benchmark SSD for PCs in the fourth quarter, fell by about 5% from the third quarter, showing a decline for the first time in a year. The main reasons are the decline in the price of core components, NAND flash memory, and the temporary suspension of demand for home and office PCs.

The report pointed out that the price of SSD is susceptible to the price of NAND flash memory because it is equipped with several NAND flash memory. In November, the wholesale price of TLC 256GB, a benchmark NAND flash memory product, dropped by about 3% from October.

In addition, the shortage of parts caused the stagnation of PC production, which also affected the price of SSD. Senior executives of the semiconductor trading company pointed out that the market generally expects that SSD prices may continue to fall in the first quarter of 2022.

Moreover, the shipment of SSDs for notebooks in 2021 is estimated to be 197 million units, which will be much higher than the 34 million HDDs. From another perspective, if the price of SSDs declines, it is expected to increase the willingness of PC makers to purchase, thereby speeding up the replacement of HDDs.
