China Mobile, Huawei and more releases 5G+ Beidou high-precision positioning road test plan

China Mobile launched the 5G + Beidou high-precision positioning Xingyao action road test plan at the Shanghai Auto Show and jointly carried out road testing across the country with major car companies. This indicates that 5G + Beidou high-precision positioning technology will enter large-scale actual testing.

The 5G + Beidou High-precision Positioning Stars Action road test plan is led by China Mobile and initiated by FAW, Dongfeng, SAIC, GAC, Great Wall, and other car companies, as well as industry chain partners such as Bosch and Huawei. It will be completed in the next three years and will cover the whole country. Road test of 1 million kilometers of roads and 100 cities. This is the first time that China Mobile’s 5G + Beidou high-precision positioning system was released in October last year.

Moreover, it has carried out a nationwide road test with the widest coverage and richest scenarios. It will further integrate the all-weather, all-day, all-geographic accurate time and space service system. It is deeply applied in transportation fields such as intelligent network connection, autonomous driving, and vehicle-road collaboration.

“China Mobile has always been committed to promoting the development of connectivity and intelligence in the automotive industry.” Liu Jian, general manager of China Mobile’s Transportation Industry Development Department, shared at the press conference. In 2014, before the commercialization of 4G, China Mobile cooperated with OnStar to complete. It is the first to become a nationwide 4G Internet of Vehicles road test, helping the Internet of Vehicles to enter the 4G era.

Since the licensing of 5G in 2019, more than 390,000 5G base stations and 4,400 Beidou differential positioning stations have been built, building the world’s largest 5G+ the Beidou high-precision positioning system realizes dynamic centimeter-level and static millimeter-level positioning capabilities and promotes the evolution and development of technologies and applications such as Internet of Vehicles, autonomous driving, and vehicle-road collaboration.

Location information is closely related to our production and life. 80% of the information in daily life has spatial location characteristics. Vertical industries also present a strong demand for location technology and location services. Although the market for high-precision positioning technology started late, it has grown rapidly and has broad prospects. It is estimated that the global market will reach 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate of over 40%. China Mobile Shanghai Industrial Research Institute actively promotes the application of 5G technology in the field of positioning and uses it to empower industries such as smart transportation.

At the press conference, the “China Mobile-China FAW” 5G Innovation Joint Laboratory was officially unveiled. The laboratory will make use of the respective advantages of China Mobile and China FAW in 5G, high-precision positioning, automobile R&D, manufacturing, etc., breakthrough key technologies, output industry research results, practice various cutting-edge applications, and promote the development of the communications industry and the automobile manufacturing industry.

China Mobile has also teamed up with FAW, SAIC, GAC, and other car companies and industry partners to explore the needs of the 5G Internet of Vehicles industry, unified technical standards, and jointly released the “5G Internet of Vehicles Technology and Testing White Paper.” China Mobile Shanghai Industrial Research Institute, Shanghai Company, Hubei Company, and Hebei Company have signed cooperation agreements with SAIC Zhonghai Ting, SAIC Motor, Dongfeng Yuexiang, and Great Wall Motors customers.

The launch of the road test plan will be the “first step in the Long March”. The deep integration of 5G and Beidou’s high-precision positioning technology will have a profound impact on applications in the transportation industry such as intelligent networking and autonomous driving. China Mobile said that in the future, it will further work with automakers and industry partners to promote the promotion and application of 5G and Beidou in the transportation industry.
