The average flash memory capacity of smartphones will exceed 100GB in 2020: Counterpoint

Research firm Counterpoint recently released a report on the NAND flash memory capacity of smartphones in 2020. The results show that the average capacity of Apple’s iPhone is still ahead of Android. In 2020, the average capacity of global smartphone flash memory will exceed 100GB for the first time.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the average iPhone capacity reached 140.9GB, which was a significant increase from 116.6GB in the previous quarter. This was due to the high sales of 256GB and 512GB iPhone 12 series phones. For Android, the average capacity of mobile phones has been growing rapidly over the years and has reached 95.7GB, which is very close to the goal of 100GB.

The report shows that the average capacity of iPhone and Android phones in 2020 has increased by 5.6% and 20.5%, respectively. Counterpoint said that Apple has not introduced new storage scales, and the maximum capacity is still 512GB. The gap in storage capacity between Apple and Android is narrowing.

Although the price of NAND flash memory continues to decline from 2019 to 2020, the research institute said that the sales share of the 256GB and 512GB versions of the iPhone has not increased significantly, and the two will account for approximately 21.5% of sales in 2020.

For Android, sales of 256GB and above versions accounted for approximately 7.5% in the fourth quarter of 2020, while sales of 128GB and above Android phones accounted for 39%.
