Tencent’s Timi gaming studio generated $10 billion in 2020: Report

Chinese tech giant Tencent’s Timi Studios, the maker of popular video games Honor of Kings and Call of Duty mobile, made $ 10 billion last year, two people who knew directly about the matter told Reuters.

Tencent aims to earn half of its game revenue from overseas from 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Many leading studios are turning to Tencent for support in converting their “hardcore” desktop or console games to mobile. Such games include long sessions and in-depth storytelling and battles, some of which include multiplayer online role-playing or online battle scenes.

Last week, Tencent reported 156.1 billion yuan ($ 23.79 billion) in total online game revenue for the year 2020, but this did not disrupt the revenue of individual studios operating independently and competing with each other.

Of Tencent’s remaining gaming revenue last year, PUBG Mobile’s developer Lightspeed, another of the highest-grossing games, contributed 29% to Quantum Studio, earning 26% by publishing to other developers. Aurora Studio Group contributed 3% to enhance the Moonlight Blade mobile title. The report declined to be identified as the information was not public.

Tencent, which benefited from the rise in paid gamers, saw online gaming revenue grow 29 percent last week to 39.1 billion yuan in the fourth quarter.
