NASA ‘Perseverance’ Mars rover will release a 4-pound helicopter

NASA’s ‘Perseverance’ Mars rover will launch a 4-pound helicopter from its abdomen, and then record a video of its flight over the Martian plains.

The $85 million rotorcraft, called Ingenuity, will create new ways to explore other planets. Although it is only being used for technical demonstrations, it will carry out up to 5 test flights this spring.

The two cameras under the plane will be able to take videos of the surface of Mars while flying. NASA declared on Wednesday that its helicopter team has selected a location for the test flight, with the first flight as early as the first week of April.

If successful, ‘Wizwit’ will be able to send some precious videos back to the earth. ‘Perseverance’ will also use its own camera to film the flight of ‘Witness’.
