Pegatron and Foxconn enter electric car industry, strategies are different

The foundries Foxconn and Pegatron have both set foot in the electric vehicle industry, but their strategies are different.

The strategy used by Foxconn is to build an open MIH modular pure electric platform and establish an MIH alliance ecosystem, while the strategy adopted by Pegatron is to produce key components for ODM/OEM.

The MIH platform was developed by Foxconn and Yulon Motors in cooperation. It is a hardware/software integration platform for the development of electric vehicles. The platform can be adapted to various models such as hatchbacks, MPVs, sedans, and SUVs.

Foxconn advertises the MIH platform as the ‘Android system for the electric vehicle industry. The platform’s software/hardware is open to other auto companies. The platform’s wheelbase can range from 2750mm to 3100mm, and the architecture supports various driving heights.

Foxconn Chief Technology Officer revealed that its MIH platform has attracted nearly 900 members, and its first general meeting will be held on March 25, 2021.

Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way said that three electric vehicles developed on the MIH platform are expected to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2021.

In February this year, Foxconn and Fisker said in a statement that the two companies have signed an agreement to jointly develop an electric car. According to the agreement, Foxconn will produce this electric car that will be based on the car chassis developed by the company. Mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The annual output is expected to exceed 250,000. Pegatron produces a variety of automotive parts, including wireless communication modules, ECUs, automotive panels, wiring harnesses, structural parts, voltage transformers, and charging piles.

The company has become a supplier of Tesla electronic control units and home charging stations, and a supplier of onboard tablet computers for Audi and Toyota vehicles.

In December 2020, sources in the upstream supply chain said that in the fourth quarter of last year, Pegatron received an increase in orders for the Tesla Model 3 central control system.

Along with this, the source also stated that Pegatron was exploring building a factory in the United States to better serve Tesla’s supply chain requirements.
