Nvidia officially launched Resizable BAR function

The Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card was officially launched in the early hours of this morning, with a starting price of 2,499 yuan and a high-end model of over 4,000 yuan.

Nvidia has officially launched the Resizable BAR function, which allows the CPU to directly access the graphics card memory, improving game performance by more than 10%. The newly released RTX 3060 will be the first graphics card to enjoy the Resizable BAR function.

This function is one of the functions of the PCIe channel. It can unlock the limitation of CPU access to the video memory. The CPU can only read 256MB of video memory before it is turned on, and it can read all video memory after unlocking.

AMD RX 6000 series graphics cards will support this feature in 2020, called Memory Smart Technology (SAM). Nvidia said that other RTX 30 series graphics cards other than RTX 3060 will support the Resizable BAR function later in March.

The Resizable BAR function supports the mixed-use of products on different platforms. Nvidia has previously cooperated with Intel and AMD to develop this function to support multiple motherboard chipsets.

AMD Zen3 architecture Ryzen 5000 series CPUs, Intel 10th generation, and 11th generation Core processors will all support the Resizable BAR function of Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics cards.

Intel officially stated that this feature can increase the frame rate of some games by more than 10% when enabled, and the effect is more obvious in high-resolution games.

The effect is similar to the SAM technology of the AMD platform. However, there are still a small number of games that have experienced a drop in frame rate.

Currently, Nvidia Resizable BAR function supports the following games:

  • “Assassin’s Creed: Hall of Valor”
  • “Battlefield 5”
  • “Borderland 3”
  • “Forza Horizon 4”
  • “Gears 5”
  • “Metro: Departure”
  • “Red Dead Redemption: Redemption 2”
  • “Watch Dogs: Legion”

Nvidia stated it will give VBIOS updates for the remaining RTX 30 series graphics cards in late March and will support more games.

If users want to enable this function, they also need to upgrade the motherboard BIOS to the latest version, because the Resizable BAR function needs to be enabled in the motherboard BIOS.

Nvidia stated that some motherboards of Asus, ASRock, Colorful, EVGA, Gigabyte, and MSI already support this function.
