Today, MediaTek released a new 5G modem M80 that supports millimeter-wave and Sub-6GHz 5G frequency bands. Independent networking (SA) and non-independent networking (NSA), the M80 5G modem supports ultra-high 5G transmission rates, with a maximum downlink rate of 7.67Gbps and a peak uplink rate of 3.76Gbps.

The M80 5G modem also supports industry-leading technologies like dual 5G SIM cards, dual 5G NSA and SA networks, and dual VoNR, bringing users a more reliable high-speed 5G connection.

Dr. Xu Jingquan, Deputy General Manager and General Manager of the Wireless Communications Division of MediaTek, declared: ‘With the accelerated deployment of 5G worldwide, millimeter wave technology is becoming more and more important.

The M80 5G modem completely supports millimeter-wave and Sub-6GHz 5G frequency bands, providing equipment manufacturers with more High flexibility.

The M80 5G modem not only supports the latest global mobile cellular network standards and specifications but also integrates MediaTek’s excellent power-saving technology and ultra-high-speed connection technology to enhance the user’s 5G experience.

MediaTek 5G modems are suitable for various devices such as mobile phones, personal computers, MiFi, CPE, and the industrial Internet of Things. The first-generation 5G modem M70 has been integrated into the high-performance, low-power Dimensity series of 5G mobile chips, and is widely used in 5G terminals.

Additionally, MediaTek’s 5G product T700 will be used in 5G personal computers to be launched in 2021, and the T750 chip can be used in 5G fixed wireless access routers (FWA) and mobile hotspot devices.

Currently, the M80 5G modem has been tested in accordance with relevant industry standards, and samples are expected to be sent to customers in 2021 to provide global operators with a full range of wireless access technical support:

  • Compliant with 3GPP Release 16 standard specifications
  • Support dual connectivity and carrier aggregation in Sub-6GHz and millimeter wave bands
  • Support 5G Sub-6GHz (FR1) multi-carrier aggregation
  • 5G millimeter-wave (FR2) supports up to 8 carrier aggregation
  • Support TDD and FDD carrier aggregation
  • Support dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS)

The M80 5G modem integrates MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave power-saving technology to strengthen power-saving optimization from the chip layer. 5G UltraSave can intelligently detect the network environment and identify OTA content, and dynamically adjust the power configuration and operating frequency according to the network environment.

M80 also integrates BWP dynamic bandwidth control technology to automatically adapt low bandwidth or high bandwidth to meet the different needs of data throughput, and optimize bandwidth usage to the greatest extent.

Additionally, M80 also supports C-DRX energy-saving management technology that can automatically switch between active and dormant states, keeping the connected state while decreasing communication power consumption.
