According to the latest reports, Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess (Herbert Diess) said that compared with traditional competitors such as Toyota Motor Corporation, cash-rich technology giants entering the auto industry pose a greater threat to the public.
When asked about reports that Apple is developing self-driving cars, Dess posted on the professional social networking site LinkedIn: “We look forward to the arrival of new competitors, who will definitely accelerate the transformation of our industry and bring new technologies. However, the incredible valuations of these companies and the almost limitless access to resources have also put us under tremendous pressure.”
Dess, 62, received a new vote of confidence from the Volkswagen Supervisory Board this month. After internal disputes made investors uneasy, he hopes to lead this huge industrial group to become more flexible. 2021 is crucial for Volkswagen. The group will accelerate the promotion of electric vehicles with new models such as the ID.4 compact SUV and the more spacious Porsche Taycan.
Dess announced a plan at an internal meeting last week to allow Volkswagen’s huge factory in Wolfsburg to compete with Tesla’s factory on the outskirts of Berlin. Tesla’s new plant in Gruenheide is bound to inspire fierce competition for engineers, workers, and customers in Volkswagen.
Dess said: “I said before: The most valuable companies in the world may still be mobile companies. These companies may be Tesla, Apple, or Volkswagen.”
